Sustainable Lawns Revisited

Yesterday’s Philadelphia Inquirer had a great article by Virginia Smith: The complexities of Greening your lawn which refers to lawns as “drug addict in need of detox.” She points out the dangers of toxic chemicals to people and pets, and the dangers of not using these chemicals properly. This is a very good review of the dangers, and the comments are very informative. What do you think?

Thanks for linking to the Inquirer site…I saw the article in print, but it was very heartening to see the rich dialogue on sustainable lawn practices being discussed by those posting comments.

It makes me so very happy that we have never opted for a lawn…starting with the suburban rental in Upper Darby, PA where we dug up steep front lawn to put in a tiered veggie garden. I will never forget the awe of the neighborhood children who had never seen cucumbers on the vine! Oh, how I miss those spicy nasturtium flowers on our freshly grown green salads…
