All birds need water to survive. Although I have several bird baths, a pond, and a mister, this Carolina Chickadee prefers to drink from the water well in the hummingbird feeder. It’s really quite funny to watch them get a firm grip on the post and then stick their heads down into the water well.
I was once installing a pond for a client that had a long stream and waterfall leading to it. I had the bottom pond liner in and was laying out the liner for the stream when I noticed a Black-throated Green Warbler scrambling around along the liner as if to say, “Hey, where’s the water?”
These are very good examples of how adept birds are at meeting their needs with even the smallest help from us.
