I get asked this question a lot, so I thought I’d answer it for you right here at the start. This short answer is, I am choosing here to talk about the ways the choices we make can have positive consequences for protecting wildlife, conserving natural resources, and creating healthy ecosystems.
The other part of this answer is that many others are already discussing sustainability as it relates to food, and they’re doing a great job so there’s no reason to repeat all of that here. Here’s some resources to get you started:
- Susan Harris of Garden Rant and Sustainable Gardening Blog often talks about food issues. In fact, she did just yesterday in an article entitled “Kitchen Gardens as Promising Cure for Eating Disorders – Alert the Media!”
- Natasha Chart discusses food sustainability issues and policy at Sustainable Food
- Urban Gardens talks about many issues and methods of food gardening
- And the 100 Mile Diet: Local Eating for Global Change
- First certified organic rooftop farm
Each of these sites offers recommended reading lists. Check them out to get more information on sustainable eating.
