We got a lot of snow yesterday, and the birds sure were hungry!

Seeing the birds in such blizzard conditions makes them look so vulnerable… Your refuge for them is terrific and you then get these lovely captures! I love seeing them all puffed up … to keep warm. Hope you were not among the many without power.

Thanks Carol. We got lucky and our power stayed on, though many areas around us were without it.

We shoveled a path to the bird feeders early in the morning. Fortunately, the dogs kept it pretty passable for the rest of the day with their playing, so we could make sure the feeders stayed full. I just love that the Juncos and Sparrows continue to feast on last seasons seed heads. That’s why I never cut them back until early spring.

The female cardinal is particularly pretty!

I’m looking forward to some good birdwatching with the sunlight on snow reflecting upward and making the birds less backlit.

So beautiful! They always look so striking against snow! And I swear I NEVER see a junco (snowbird we always called ‘em) when there isn’t snow on the ground. Always wonder where they go….. !!

Love the cardinal photo. I had a whole host of birds in my Kansas back yard yesterday. Robins were flocking in the oak tree and rooting around in exposed earth below the trees, where the snow had melted. There were more juncos than I’ve seen all winter. And there was a cardinal and at least one chickadee too.

Do you take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count? One of my readers is excited about doing it for the first time.

I’ve done the Great Backyard Bird Count for many years. It’s fun and the information gathered is vital for scientists in discovering population trends.
