Winter Habitat Garden for BirdsFor those of you in the Mid-Atlantic states, I hope you have managed to dig yourself out from under all the snow we got in two separate storms within 5 days. The sun is shining today and it’s actually very pretty outside.

Here’s my picks for best of the web this week, and when you get there, tell them Carole sent you:

Ever wondered what the origins of Valentines Day are? Did you know it was based on bird behavior? Teresa O’Connor gives us all the details with some stunning photos of old cards. Follow @SeasonalWisdom.

Carol of Flower Hill Farm has written from the heart about her plans for “Giving Gardens” and her desire to donate food from her garden to people in need. As always she’s got some amazing photographs to illustrate her post.

Risa Edelstein accepted her Honest Scrap award with a delightful post. Follow @gardengoodlife

My friend Judy of the Woods has started a new discussion community focused on green marketing. For right now it’s free to join, but that won’t be the case for long. She’s bringing together some great folks and I’d love to see you there too. Her advice is wonderful: Be the change you wish to see! Follow @judyofthewoods

Lisa Gustavson of Get in the Garden asked me a question by email this week about how to educate your neighbors about wildlife in the garden when they think all critters are pests. Please come add your thoughts to this discussion. It’s important and we’re building on the collective wisdom of the group. Follow @getinthegarden.

Who is your favorite wildlife gardener? I’m always looking for new writers to add to this column. So if you know of someone who is writing about gardening for wildlife please let me know.

Carole:

What a delightful surprise to find Seasonal Wisdom on this great list of eco-friendly gardeners. Enjoyed reading everyone’s posts, and I always find something interesting to read here too.

Thanks for spreading the word about the importance of sustainable gardening on your blog, as well as the work of these talented writers. Warm regards, Teresa

Interesting picks, and thanks for the mention. My view of Valentine’s Day has dramatically changed. Now I see it as the herald of renewed life and spring, rather than some arbitrary day of love, with a daft custom to send out tonnes of dead trees for meaningless drivel. I did in fact see a robin the other day with moss in its beak. This is the milder parts of the UK.
