Best of the Web: New Year Edition

Birdhouse in the Snow

Winter wildlife garden

I had a wonderful Christmas with my family and an amazing New Year with friends. I’m feeling so blessed!

I did have an unexpected forced absence from my computer, though. My hard drive picked that week to crash. No twitter, no Facebook, and no blogging.

I’m pleased to say that my computer has been returned to me in much better health, but a new hard drive means that I’m starting the year with a completely blank slate: no programs, no documents, no photos.

While I decide what programs I REALLY need to reinstall on my computer, and while I am so grateful that I actually remembered to back up the computer only a few days prior to the crash, here are some things that I missed around the web this week, and maybe you did too.

Wendy Gabriel, of My Green Side, has pulled together a great list of 25 best green sites for 2009. I am so tickled that Ecosystem Gardening has made this list. Thanks Wendy! This is a good list of folks for you to read and learn. Follow @MyGreenSide

Alison Kerr has beat me to the punch in her review of Joe Lampl’s The Green Gardeners Guide. This is a great book to help you in making better decisions to green your garden. While you’re there, spend some time checking out Alison’s site Loving Nature’s Garden and follow her on Twitter @alisonkerr

The always insightful Helen Yoest has written a great article on What You Need to Know About a Plant before you put it in your garden. There are so many variables to consider, prime among them being a knowledge of the conditions in YOUR garden. Follow @HelenYoest

Gardening and the Good Life by Risa Edelstein is a wonderful resource. Check out 10 Garden Trends to Watch in 2010, where Risa makes a case for messy, organic, edible, sustainable, and wildlife benefitting gardening. I’m with Risa, let’s make this the norm in gardening standards! Follow @gardengoodlife

Lisa Gustavson is making me hungry. Check out her amazing indoor vegetable garden. Can you imagine eggplant, okra, peppers and tomatoes fresh from the garden in January? She can. Follow @getinthegarden

Kathy Green has given us a great retrospective of a full year in her Colorado wildlife garden. I’d love to see this garden in our Ecosystem Garden Showcase!

My email box is overflowing, I have hundreds of items in my RSS reader, and pages and pages of twitter posts to go through that accumulated while I was computerless, so more good stuff to come next week.

In the meantime, what’s in your garden? What are you planning for the coming year?
